3. Reading — Why the World Cup Ball Matters
In soccer, the ball is not just an object. The ball can change the rhythm of the match. It can change how players pass, shoot, and dribble. It can also change how goalkeepers react. That is why the World Cup ball is always a big topic.
In the past, players did not have many choices. The balls were made of leather and were heavy. They were not perfectly round. They were also not very consistent. One ball could feel different from another ball. When it rained, the leather absorbed water. The ball became wet, heavier, and harder to kick. Because of this, the game could feel slower and more physical. Players needed more strength to make long passes and strong shots.
Over time, companies started to improve the ball. They used better shapes and better materials. The ball became more round. It became lighter. It became more comfortable to kick. These changes helped players improve their technique. Passing became faster. Shots became more accurate. The ball also became easier to see on TV, which was important when football became a global show.
Later, technology became a big part of ball design. Companies started to test balls with machines and computers. They studied the ball’s flight in the air. They tested how it moves, how it bounces, and how it reacts to different kicks. This created new types of balls: some balls felt very fast, some felt very stable, and some had a strange movement in the air. Many players loved new balls, but some players complained because it changed the “feeling” of the game.
Today, modern World Cup balls are designed for speed and control. They are made to keep their shape. They are made to fly in a more stable way. Many of them also work with match technology, like tracking. The World Cup ball is now part of the “high-tech” side of soccer, and it continues to evolve.
4. World Cup Balls Through History
1930s – Early Leather Balls

The first World Cup balls were simple. They were made of thick leather and had laces. The laces could be uncomfortable when players headed the ball. These balls were heavy, and they were not always perfectly round. When the ball became wet, it became heavier. This made the match slower and made long passes harder.
1970 – Telstar (A Big Change)

The Telstar is one of the most famous World Cup balls. It had a black-and-white design, which helped people see it better on television. It also had a more modern shape and a more consistent feel. Players could control it better, and it became a symbol of a new era in soccer.
1998 – Tricolore (More Modern Materials)

The Tricolore was lighter and used more modern materials. It also added color and style. This ball helped the game feel faster. Players could pass with more precision and shoot with more confidence. It also shows how the World Cup became more modern and more focused on design.
2010 – Jabulani (Fast and Unpredictable)

The Jabulani became very famous because of its movement. Many players said it was too fast. Many goalkeepers said it was hard to predict because it could change direction in the air. Some people loved it because it created exciting goals. Other people disliked it because it felt “strange” and different from normal balls.
2022 – Al Rihla (Speed + Control + Technology)

The Al Rihla was designed to be fast, but also more stable than some older balls. It used modern materials and a modern panel design. It was also part of a World Cup with more technology, including match systems that help decisions. Players could make quick passes, and the ball supported a fast style of play.
2026 – The Official World Cup Ball

The 2026 ball represents the newest step in World Cup ball evolution. The goal is usually the same: keep the ball fast, but more controlled and stable. Modern balls try to reduce “random” movement and create a cleaner flight. This helps players trust the ball when they pass and shoot. It also helps goalkeepers read the ball better. The 2026 ball will also match a World Cup that is very modern, very global, and very connected to technology.
Because the 2026 World Cup will be huge and watched by many countries, the ball needs to work well in many stadiums and conditions. In modern soccer, even small changes in the ball can change the match. A ball can support long shots, fast counterattacks, quick passes, and stronger crosses. That is why the 2026 ball is not only about style. It is also about performance.

9. Blog Comment Question
Do you think modern World Cup balls make soccer more exciting or more difficult? Explain.
Example comment:
I think modern World Cup balls make soccer more exciting because the game becomes faster. Players can pass quickly and shoot with more power. But sometimes goalkeepers have more difficulty because the ball can move fast in the air.

In my opinion, I think that my favorite ball is Al Rihla, because the shape and the colors make this ball beautiful and perfect. Al Rihla was used at the 2022 World Cup at Qatar, it was my first time watching the World Cup, and because of this, this ball is very special for me.
Also, there are other balls that are beautiful for me, Trionda and Telstar are one of my favorite balls too. But I think that Al Rihla is more beautiful than Trionda and Telstar because it was my first time watching the World Cup and also because of the shape and colors.
And because of this, I think that Al Rihla is my favorite ball.
In my opinion, I think that I prefer the new balls because they are faster and the players could do powerful shots easily.
A negative point of the the balls of the past is that the balls were heavy and were made of leather that absorbed the water and this made the ball difficult to shoot and pass
My favorite ball is the Trionda because this ball is like the 2022 world cup ball but more beautiful. This ball is called like this because of the ball color that is red, blue and green that represents the hosts countries. For red we have Canada, For blue we have USA and for green we have Mexico.
Also there are other styles of balls like the Jabulani that is one of the most famous balls because this ball is very random, this ball is very bad for the goalkeepers because this ball is difficult to predict.
This is why I like the Trionda.
I don’t know if my opinion is going to be “valid” here, because I’m not an expert when it comes to soccer. What I’m trying to say is that I can only analyse balls looking at the design, not the performance. To make things worse, I’m a person who loves history, so I’m very inclined to choose more historic balls.
To be objective, my favorite ball is the Telstar because of one thing: it’s the classic soccer ball of our childhood. I remember that, here in Brazil, we had a ball called “Dente de Leite”. This ball was very similar to the Telstar, but it was very light and comfortable. It was a classic ball made for kids.
Another interesting thing is that the Telstar was a ball created for the black and white TVs of the time. This is something that I didn’t know about before this lesson. Because of this, my favorite ball is always going to be the Telstar.
In my opinion, the ball Jabulani is a very interesting ball to play. I say this because this ball has a very indeterminate movement in the air. Because of this, many players hated this ball. The Jabulani is very difficult to predict. Because of this, this ball created many amazing goals, and this ball made a lot of crazy curves.
The telstar is one of the most famous balls in the history of soccer. This ball is the classic black and white ball, I know that everybody had this ball in the past.
I don’t know a lot of things about soccer, but I think my favorite soccer ball is the Telstar. I say this because it is the classic ball. When I was a kid, I had a tradition to play sometimes with this ball. Also, I like this ball because it is so nostalgic, everyone played with this ball when they were kids. I think that this ball became a symbol of soccer.
The most interesting thing about Telstar in my opinion is the fact that this ball was created because of the TV. In this time, the TV was in black and white, it was necessary to make this ball black and white, to be more visible. There are other interesting and beautiful balls, because the history of soccer is so big.
I don’t have a favorite ball, because every ball is good, but in relation to the most beautiful ball in my opinion Im going to say the Al Rihla, because I had this ball and this ball is so beautiful and fun to play.
And in relation to the most traditional ball, the most traditional ball is the Telstar, because this ball is the classic white and black ball.
